Description:
This hand-sculpted spiraling seashell-like gem of a dream home is located in an eco-community just 3 kilometers (an 8-minute drive, half-hour bicycle ride, and less than an hour’s walk) from Tamarindo Beach–one of the most popular tourist attractions in all of Costa Rica. Although it’s situated in a very tranquil and undeveloped part of town loaded with wildlife on the back road to Tamarindo, it’s just a few minutes drive from the central plaza of Villarreal. Within a few kilometers, there are numerous supermarkets, restaurants, schools, hardware stores, shops, medical, dental & veterinary clinics, pharmacies, banks, golf courses, airport, cinema, post office, gas station, etc., and the Liberia International Airport is only 45 minutes away.
Earthquake, mold, and fire-resistant, this cob home is aligned with the directions of a compass and is encircled by a roofed veranda with a concrete walkway. There are decorative welded steel security bars on the door and windows. Inside (around the central post) is a spiral staircase that leads to a loft. The floors are covered with cool and easy to clean ceramic tiles, and the house contains two built-in compost toilets, a bidet, and a shower. The thick, metal-reinforced straw and earthen walls (along with the excellent ventilation) protect it from the heat so it stays cool most of the year without being dependent on air-conditioning. Unlike residents of most concrete homes in the area, you won’t wake up sweating in the middle of the night every time there’s a power failure.
This giant work of art is conveniently located on a 5000-meter (~1.25 acre) agricultural lot that has its own well with delicious clean water, electricity, internet access, and soon fiber optic cables will be available too. The homesite is fenced and contains numerous fruit trees such as bananas, plantains, oranges, lemons, mulberries, mangos, papayas, almonds, cashews, neem, pineapples, etc., and behind the house there is a moat that fills up with water during the wet season creating a mini island in the center. There is also a 6×6-meter vaulted concrete room (suitable as guest quarters) with thick steel doors and bars for extra storage and security.
This one-of-a-kind sustainably built livable sculpture is one of the most special and unique homes you will find !
